The Listening Lifstyle

Luke 10: 38-42 (TPT) As Jesus and the disciples continued on their journey, they came to a village where a woman welcomed Jesus into her home. Her name was Martha and she had a sister named Mary. Mary sat down attentively before the Master, absorbing every revelation he shared.

Mark 4:9 (NIV)
"He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
Mark 4:13-14 (NIV) …Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? The farmer sows the word.
Mark 4:20 (NIV)
…Seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop--thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown."

The listening lifestyle
Switching From Hearing to Listening.
John 10:27 (NIV) My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

  • “If we aren’t listening, we aren’t following.”

1 Samuel 3:1-11 (NIV) 1 The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions. 2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, "Here I am." 5 And he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So he went and lay down…10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening." 11 And the LORD said to Samuel…

1. QUIET DOWN

Mark 6:30-34 (NLT) 30 The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. 31 Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. 32 So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone.

  • Get past the noise and quiet down.

Psalm 46:10 (NIV) Be still, and know that I am God.

2. OPEN UP
Revelation 3:20 (NLT) “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.
Matthew 13:14-15 (NIV) ...ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people's heart has become calloused….

  • Jesus is not offended by your honesty.

3. LEAN IN
  • Make the switch, form close to closer & deep to deeper.

John 13:23-26 (NKJV) 23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke. 25 Then, leaning back on Jesus' breast, he said to Him, "Lord, who is it?" 26 Jesus answered, "It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it." And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

“We listen best by leaning in close.”

4. Stay tuned in.

1 John 1:1-3 (NIV) 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched--this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
