Holy Ghost: Who is the Holy Spirit?

John 14:8–21 (NIV) 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.  15 “If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—17 the Spirit of truth.  The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.”

Who is the Holy Spirit?
1. He is God
Genesis 1:1–2 (NIV) In the beginning God(Elohim) created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God(Elohim) was  hovering over the waters.

2. He is the Holy Spirit

Holy:

Spirit:
3. He is a person, not an “it.”

“The Holy Spirit is not weird, but he is wild.”

John 14:17 (NIV) The Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him…

“The Holy Spirit may seem strange, but he is no stranger.”

When we are filled with the Spirit:
1. We are God’s dwelling place

John 14:17-19 (NIV) 17…For he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.

He resides in those who are his.
“Under the Old Covenant, The Holy Spirit would rest temporarily; in the New Covenant, the Holy Spirit resides permanently!”

I Corinthians 6:19(NLT) Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?

2. We can experience total victory
John 14:19 (NIV) …Because I live, you also will live.

Romans 8:11 (NIV) The Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

1 John 4:4 (NLT)  You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

3. To function like Jesus

John 14:12(NIV) I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these because I am going to the Father.

Jesus on the earth was the prototype of those filled with the Spirit.

Philippians 2:6–7 (NLT) 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.

Acts 10:38 (NIV) God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

His only limitation is our yielding!
1 Thessalonians 5:19(NIV)  Do not quench(stifle) the Holy Spirit.

Ministry:
Acts 19:2 (NIV) "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
